Unveiling precipitation behavior in Mg-Y based alloys

Mg-Y based alloys exhibit a promising combination of strength and deformability through tuning precipitation solute strengthening mechanisms tailoring the activity non-basal dislocations. Understanding sequence its dependence on Yttrium concentration in matrix will provide guideline for fine structure, morphology distribution precipitates alloys. In this paper, we explore behaviors Mg-11Y (wt%) Mg-11Y-1Al using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, rationalize experimental observations first-principles density functional theory calculations. The during ageing at 225 °C is identified to be SSSS ? clusters/G.P. Zones ? ? (Mg 7 Y) ??/ t ?? 3 Y). A novel phase forms in-situ transformation from phase, which shares same Mg Y composition with D0 19 - exhibits cbco -structure as • new sequence, Y), observed has transformed phase. stable after long-time exposure elevated temperature.

The formation of the icosahedral phase, BCC (Body centred cubic) phase and nanocrystals are seen in the as-cast alloy with nominal composition of Mg4Zn94Y2. FCC (face centred cubic) phase and modulated structures are formed in the alloys with higher Y content (10% and 25% Y respectively).
